The firm was established as J. O. Hambro Investment Management in 1986.〔Tanzeel Akhtar, (JO Hambro rebrands as Waverton Investment Management ), ''Interactive Investor'', 13 January 2014〕 It was co-founded by Richard Hambro, Lord Balniel, and David Chaplin.〔Emiliya Mychasuk, Emiko Terazono, (Hambro era shift ), ''Financial Times'', 28 May 2009〕 It was named in honor of Richard Hambro's father, Jocelyn Olaf Hambro.〔 It is a completely separate company from J.O. Hambro Capital Management.〔
The firm was acquired by Credit Suisse in 2001,〔〔Anousha Sakoui, Haig Simonian, (Credit Suisse weighs up JOHIM sale ), ''Financial Times'', 20 May 2012〕 who sold it to Somers Limited in 2013.〔James Phillipps, (JO Hambro Investment Management rebrands as Waverton ), ''Citywire'', 13 January 2014〕
The firm had GBP£4.3 billion of assets under management as at 30 Sept 2015. It was renamed Waverton Investment Management in 2014,〔 after Richard Hambro's family home.〔 Its Chief Executive is Andrew Fleming.
